Under Contract
July 1779, New York City
Betty Floyd is the niece of William Floyd, a signer of the Declaration of Independence. When the British seize her Long Island farm during the occupation of New York, she and her family must flee to the city and keep their Patriot ties a secret. Embracing her new life, Betty views the dances and parties with handsome British officers as a pleasant diversion from the war.
But when prison guards murder a Patriot prisoner she has befriended, Betty can no longer keep the war at arm’s length. She confides in her cousin, Robert Townsend, who invites her to join the highly secretive Culper Ring, General Washington’s group of citizen spies. While she dances and flirts her way into the enemy’s confidence, she catches the eye of the Director of British Intelligence, the charming Major John André. Now, invitations to New York’s finest balls and soirees abound, yet the slightest misstep could expose her true mission and that of the entire Ring.
Amid heightening collision between duty to her country and a deepening affection for the Major, Betty attempts to uncover a plot led by Benedict Arnold while the British close in on the Ring, leading her to the very brink of death.
Was Betty Floyd the spy known to this day as Agent 355?
Based on the true story of “the lady who will outwit them all.”
